Should you try gluten-free? Plus 5 delicious recipes
Yes, yes! You absolutely should give it a try, but read this first:
Please keep in mind that gluten-free foods are not a one-way ticket to eating anything and everything that says “GF”. I’ve seen many food journals over the years and hear people proudly declare to me: “I’m eating gluten-free”, but there’s a catch — you want to avoid eating gluten-free junk foods.
This reminds me of the automatic “health” false impression “certified organic” gives many people. Just because something is “certified organic and gluten-free” doesn’t mean that those ice cream sandwiches are a healthy choice. The ice cream sandwich might be made with white rice flour and all the ingredients farmed using organic methods, but that 25g of sugar per serving will not do your body good, nor will that nutrient-poor white rice flour.
That being said, there are so many wonderful gluten-free foods to enjoy if you find that you have trouble digesting gluten and you want to give it a try. And yes, I do recommend taking a break from gluten from time to time (unless you have celiac disease or a serious gluten insensitivity then complete cessation is the only solution) because it has many benefits. The key is to choose healthy gluten-free foods that still contain fibre, B vitamins, antioxidants and minerals. These benefits include, but certainly not limited to:
- Weight loss (or rather, reduction of belly bloat)
- Better digestion
- Increase in energy
- Improved skin health
Now to make things easier, I have created a short gluten-free guide on my website to help you figure out what contains gluten and what does not.
Here are some of my favourite and most loved gluten-free recipes that are delicious and nutritious:
- Apple Spice Rice Bake
- Sexy Maca Balls
- Warm Breakfast Banana Bowl with Teff & Almond Flour
- Chocolate chip cookies
- Almond coconut power cookies
