Deepen your Winter Solstice experience.
Tomorrow marks the Winter Solstice, the first day of winter, the onset of winter. It also simultaneously marks the longest night and the shortest day of the year. The sun will travel on its lowest arc in the sky.
There is a cycle of death and rebirth that is happening. The solstice sun, that is at its lowest and darkest, dies, only to be reborn the next day to increasingly more light. I want to share with you, some oils, rituals and the how I honour the Chakras and the power of my body during this time of death and rebirth.
Honouring the Chakras
The third chakra, or the solar plexus, is considered our chakra to access the sun’s light. Chakras are the centers of spiritual power in the human body. During the Winter Solstice, I believe in the power of honouring the 3rd chakra energies with essential oils. Some essential oils that connect us to our light and to our highest wisdom include:
- Frankincense – The Oil of Truth, invites love, protection, wisdom and spiritual openness.
- Vetiver – The Oil of Centering, invites a feeling of being centered, grounded, present and connected. *
- Cedarwood – The Oil of Community, invites connection, belonging, social bonds and joy in relationships. *
- Lavender – The Oil of Communication, invites open communication, a relaxed state and being heard.
- Helichrysum – The Oil for Pain, invites healing, courage, hope and perseverance. *
- Myrrh – The Oil of Mother Earth, invites a feeling of safety in the world, healthy attachments and trusting in the goodness of life. *
- White Fir – The Oil of Generational Healing, invites freedom, healthy patterns and creating new pathways.*
How to use these oils for your Winter Solstice experience:
I recommend rubbing 1-2 drops of one of these oils, mixed with a few drops of fractionated coconut oil (or kitchen coconut oil!), on the belly, the heart and the bottoms of the feet. Set an intention as part of the ritual to bring light and wisdom to the new season. I also recommend placing 3-4 drops (total) in your diffuser. This is a powerful way to invite in the light, send away the darkness and make your home smell delightful! You can diffuse 3-4 drops of these single oils listed above or follow some of my favourite rituals here:
Frankincense is special in that it blends well with all oils! You can blend 2 drops of frankincense with 2 drops of any of the other oils listed above to diffuse. You can use Frankincense on its own as well during the day or at night! Frankincense invites in love, protection, wisdom and spiritual openness.
Diffusing 3 drops of Cedarwood at night invites a very deep sleep. This is a nice masculine aroma for men as well. It invites in the feelings of community, connection, support, social bonds and joy in relationships.
Diffusing helichrysum on its own during the day works well to bring courage into your heart.
Diffusing 2 drops Vetiver + 2 drops Lavender is a wonderful sleep blend that invites the light into your heart while you sleep.
Recognizing the darkness
It’s also important to recognize that the Winter Solstice can be a very dark time of year for many of us. We are not all sunshine and light during this time of the year. Despite the Winter Solstice’s movement from darkness to light, the change of season from fall to winter can be a time of fatigue, melancholy and stress. We can get stuck in the darkness and we are commonly unable to see the light or believe that it will come. Essential oils that can stimulate and wake up our systems are rosemary, peppermint, lemon, ginger, tea tree (melaleuca) and cypress. I recommend diffusing 3-4 drops (total) of any of these oils during the day at home or in your office (or if you’re me, in the car) to assist in releasing darkness and gently wake our systems up to the light.
Essential oils that can assist in building self-confidence, increasing self-worth and bringing on a positive attitude and a desire to be in community are Frankincense (the oil of truth), Cedarwood (the oil of community), and Ylang Ylang (the oil of the Inner Child). These can be diffused, applied to the feet, the heart or the belly as explained above. You can also watch this video I created on how to use oils in the three different ways explained here:
